Aubrey Michalofsky Social Justice Scholarship

Aubrey Michalofsky Social Justice Scholarship

Aubrey Michalofsky was born and raised in Nelson, British Columbia, and was known from an early age for his intelligence, curiosity, and deep sensitivity to the world around him. Loyal and loving, Aubrey was fiercely protective of his friends and family, quick with humour, and guided by a profound compassion for others. He held an unwavering belief in the inherent potential of every human being and was openly intolerant of racism, inequality, and ignorance—values that shaped both his personal life and academic path

Driven by a strong sense of social justice, Aubrey pursued his studies at Selkirk College, beginning in Liberal Arts and graduating with a diploma in Law & Justice in 2021. His time at Selkirk was the pinnacle of his adult life. Aubrey deeply valued the camaraderie, sense of belonging, and encouragement he found within the program, particularly from instructors who challenged and believed in him. A private but diligent learner, Aubrey maintained carefully kept notebooks that reflected a focused, engaged mind. He took particular pride in meeting high academic expectations and was nominated for an Excellence award in 2020—recognition that affirmed both his abilities and perseverance

Despite excelling academically, Aubrey faced significant personal hardships, including living with addiction. The isolation brought on during the COVID-19 pandemic made sustaining connection and community more difficult, contributing to these challenges. In 2022, Aubrey died as a result of the toxic drug supply—a tragic reality affecting countless young people across British Columbia and Canada. Even in his struggles, Aubrey remained compassionate and hopeful, continuing to encourage others toward health, dignity, and possibility
