Lois & Marty Hall Memorial Bursary

Lois & Marty Hall Memorial Bursary

With roots deep in Canada’s prairies, Marty and Lois Hall were married for more than 50 years. A small business owner and entrepreneur who eventually settled in Calgary, Marty was an active community member in service clubs and volunteer boards. They moved to Nelson in 2007 to be closer to their grandkids. Due to ill health, their final days were spent at Mountain Lakes Seniors Community where they were provided with loving care. Former Selkirk College Communications Coordinator Bob Hall started this bursary in his parent’s name upon their passing, in order to give back to the community that provided so much to him while working at the college between 2013 and 2025.

Impact

The challenges of elder care are immense for all involved. When it became necessary for my parents to enter both assisted living and then residential care, we had young children. We were caught in the classic sandwich generation situation which places considerable pressure on those needing to look after their parents. To have a system in British Columbia that provides equitable elder care to those who need it helps make Canada the great nation it is. To have individuals who are willing to make this very difficult career choices to work in this area of health care fills my family with gratitude. In particular, the Health Care Assistants who cared for my parents were angels that walk the earth. We started this bursary to recognize this courageous career choice and the individuals who take this on so their loved ones can take comfort that they are cared for in the most respectful way. We hope that students who receive this award will serve the individuals and families with the same love we received during this very difficult times of our lives.
